Cats and kittens LOVE to scratch! It's part of their nature. Oftentimes, we have customers in our store ask, "How do I get my cat to stop scratching?" My response is always the same. You CAN'T get your cat to stop scratching (nor would you want to)...but we can help you to get your cat to scratch appropriate things!
Scratching, for cats, is important. It's natural for them, its excercise, its used to mark their territory, and many experts believe its important for their mental health and well-being. So, our job is to give them places they can scratch...instead of ruining our couches, table legs, or worse...scratching us!
That's where the simple scratching post comes in. There are a few major benefits:
- They take up very little space
- They are very inexpensive
- They give your cat(s) an appropriate place to scratch without being punished
A common issue we hear in the store is that someone's cat just doesn't take to the post. They continue to scratch the couch or other things. We have come up with a great solution that seems to always do the trick. It's a catnip spray. So, instead of dry catnip, its a spray can with the catnip oil. You simply spray the post! Most cats LOVE this and it instantly attracts them to their new post!
A side benefit of the spray is that it can also be used to recharge "old" toys and make them more appealing again!
So, give your cat a scratching post. It's likely to increase your cats health and happiness...while keeping your furniture looking new.
